ACCOMPLISHMENTS

CONSULTING
  • have been consulting for almost 3 decades to top management
  • have facilitated strategic planning retreats for almost 30 years to corporate, professional, and non-profit (including State and National CPA Organizations, CPE Associations and more)
  • have a specialty niche of consulting to CPA firms throughout the US and Canada pertaining to succession, compensation, moving to a one-firm concept for operations, developing a standard operating procedure infrastructure, marketing, establishing roles and responsibilities for board governance, etc.
  • have conducted hundreds of tactical/problem solving planning sessions with executive management
  • perform as an arbitrator and negotiator in many situations with top management, financial matters and hostile situations
  • manage studies and make recommendations to improve internal controls, internal flow of information, and operations
  • worked with organizations to improve revenue through the refinement of compensation systems, employee motivation and marketing planning
  • have managed many complex automation projects, including:
    • performance of studies to determine appropriate automation alternatives,
    • have designed, developed and sold proprietary software products, including computer-based training software and retail point-of-sale software. Additionally, have designed and implemented a variety of other custom software systems for clients,
    • installation of a wide range of computer equipment and software, and
    • conversion of complex data between computers (PCs, mini's and mainframes).

WRITING & LECTURING
  • authored the books entitled Securing the Future: Building a Succession Plan for Your Firm (published in 2005 by the AICPA and the Private Company Practice Section (PCPS)); Start Consulting How to Walk the Talk (published in 1997 by the AICPA and the Chartered General Accountants of Canada), and Small Business Consulting: Making It Work (published by the Texas Society of CPAs in 1988, by the AICPA with revisions in 1989). The last book was written to discuss how CPA firms should prepare for succession, but is applicable to any professional service businesses. The three previous books were written to assist CPAs in living up to the mantra "business's most trusted advisor," but the concepts are the same for anyone wanting to develop their a consulting business.
  • developed the national workshop for CPA2Biz called "Living Up to Your Trusted Advisor Status," including developing and producing 3 hours of video training, which was market tested in 2006 and rolled out throughout the United States in 2007.
  • editor of the Texas Society of CPAs Practice Management newsletter, which includes my column called "In the Billiverse." This newsletter is distributed by 14 other State Societies as their Practice Management newsletter.
  • have written around 200 columns and feature articles for various organizations located across the United States and Canada. Some of the larger publishers have been the American Institute of CPAs, Journal of Accountancy, Chartered General Accountants of Canada, Texas Society of CPAs, Austin American Statesman, Corporate Controller, The Practical Accountant, The Practicing CPA, and others
  • past host and monthly guest speaker for a professional education tape series created for corporate controllers by Primedia Workplace Learning called Accounting and Financial Television Network. Also, was occasional guest speaker for Primedia's public practitioners video series called The CPA Report.
  • have been a panel member or facilitator of a number of live television shows broadcast to CPAs - both public and industry practitioners - (8, 4 & 2 hour formats) for organizations such as ATSN (Primedia Workplace Learning), Accounting CPE Network (TSCPA), Edward D. Jones and the TAGER system.
  • produced four video programs; Selling Professional Services for Edward D. Jones, An Executive Overview on Technology for Primedia, and two promotional tapes (one for the IBM Texas Employees Federal Credit Union and another for the Texas Society of CPAs)
  • have created and taped over fifty television broadcasts (each a little over 1 minute in length) which have been featured on Austin's CBS affiliate at various times during their news segment. This series, called You and Your Money, covered business and tax topics.
  • re-wrote the introductory chapter of the 1999 AICPA's Management of an Accounting Practice handbook.
  • wrote the 1992-93 bankruptcy chapter in the AICPA's publication entitled The Accountant's Business Manual, which has been updated each year by other authors.
  • authored the publications Texas Road Map To Starting A Business and How To Register Your Business Name In Texas for the Texas Department of Commerce, which have their most highly distributed documents to new businesses in Texas
  • have been the keynote speaker for hundreds of conferences held all over North America over the past 15 years
  • have created numerous continuing education courses on subjects such as leadership, management, consulting, sales, communications and more.
  • authored the AICPA self-study guide, Selected Readings for Financial Executives (both the 2nd and 3rd editions). Also, served as the technical reviewer for the AICPA self-study guides, The Computerwise Executive and The Computer-Ready CPA: Selected Readings.
ACCOUNTING
  • am a Certified Public Accountant and a shareholder in a CPA and management consulting firm
  • serve as an expert witness on small business related issues
  • assisted clients solicit bank funding, investor capital, and venture capital
  • determine fair values of businesses for both buyers and sellers
  • help business owners understand and improve cash and asset management
  • perform cost reduction analyses
  • have done standard compliance work in accounting, including bookkeeping, monthly taxes, and preparation of financial statements, preparing budgets and forecasts
  • have been involved in special audits for partnership agreement violations, bankruptcy hearings, fraud, etc.
MARKETING
  • help businesses formalize and/or develop their marketing strategies.
  • have developed marketing campaigns, including overall marketing plans, active and passive approaches to business development and systems to support and monitor the progress of those programs.
  • deliver customized sales and business development training to improve the personal skills of key people within an organization to identify and close business.
  • was an IBM sales representative. During my 1st year, I was a candidate for Rookie of the Year in my region and the first person to make the 100% club in my branch.
ENTREPRENEURIAL
  • have started 7 businesses since 1980. These operations include A CPA/Management Consulting Firm; Two Consulting Firms; A Ladies Professional Retail Clothing Store; A Computer Retail Software Store; A Software Manufacturing Company; A Real Estate Company
TRAINING
  • over the past 20 years, I have developed a significant number of courses on a variety of business topics to assist businesses in critical development areas. These topics include everything from leadership to communication skills, from marketing to operational efficiency, from consulting to technology, from planning to negotiating strategies, from management to personnel.

  • Graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a BBA in Marketing and a concentration in Computer Science in 1978
