Leadership Training

Bill, in his work with CPA firms, CPA Associations and companies of all sizes, has been teaching leadership materials and coaching individuals to become better managers and leaders for the past decade. During this time, he has developed materials and delivered everything from keynote speeches, 1 day workshops, and week long training on this subject matter. Dr. Paul Hersey's teachings and research conclusions from his best selling book Situational Leadership® have always been a foundation for Bill's understanding of how to develop leaders and leadership skills.

Recently, Bill contacted The Center for Leadership Studies, Inc. to discuss utilizing more of Dr. Hersey's materials in his own training. That phone call changed Bill's approach. Because of Bill's background of teaching in this area and his prominence in the CPA profession, Bill was granted special Affiliate privileges by The Center for Leadership Studies and has tailored the course layout to work with CPA professionals. Bill is now rolling out the training below to CPA Associations, CPA firms, and the businesses they serve, to help them better develop their leadership capability.

When asked why Bill switched from teaching his own course materials to those provided by The Center for Leadership Studies, Bill commented, "Not only are Dr. Hersey's materials excellent, as the founder of the field of Organizational Behavior, his research and teachings are the most field tested and practical to implement. The problem with most leadership training is that while it is interesting and espouses values and ethics you should live by, it doesn't teach you how to better lead and manage. I should know ... I've been teaching in this area for a long time. With Dr. Hersey's materials, the training and feedback mechanisms are in sync and designed to help the leader -- and those that follow -- evolve. I don't think of myself as being in the business of training ... but rather ... I offer tools to businesses that will help make a difference in their success. I not only wanted the leadership training and coaching I did to work for the CPA profession, but I wanted it to incorporate all of the tools necessary to facilitate the kind of changes necessary to evolve. One final point! Dr. Hersey's training has predominately been to the Fortune 1000 level of company because of the resources required to support programming of this high caliber. As an affiliate of The Center for Leadership Studies, I am well positioned to bring a new level of excellence to the leadership training and coaching I do at a price the small and medium sized companies and firms I serve can afford."

Situational Leadership®
Developed for The Center for Leadership Studies, Inc.
by Dr. Paul Hersey, COO

Situational Leadership® is a two-day seminar that helps managers and/or supervisors understand how people are influenced and how the principles of the program can be used to develop strategies for increasing your organization's productivity and improving the quality of your manager's effectiveness. By focusing on the skills necessary to constructively influence employees, Situational Leadership® complements and strengthens any existing management system.

Situational Leadership® is a proven and powerful skills-based program that teaches managers/supervisors how to vary their leadership style to match the behavioral needs of the individual or group they're attempting to influence, leading to improved employee performance. This frees your management from the day-to-day activities of their people and allows them to concentrate on longer-term strategies. Situational Leadership® helps managers develop employees and teaches them how to reverse an employee's faltering performance. This is done by achieving the following objectives:

  • Understanding how effective leaders vary their leadership style to match the readiness level of each of their followers
  • Learning how Situational Leadership® can be used to develop followers, and how it can also help reverse a follower's faltering performance
  • Illustrating how to manage differently in various situations for achieving greatest results
At the conclusion of this seminar, the participants will be able to identify how able, willing, and confident a follower is to complete a work assignment. The leader will be able to adjust his/her leadership style to the most effective type resulting in less frustration, less misdirection, fewer misunderstandings, and fewer mistakes.

Situational Leadership® is one of the most widely accepted leadership development programs in the human resource arena. This is supported by:

Module 5: Twelve O'Clock High (TOCH)

Twelve O'Clock High (TOCH) is based on Twentieth Century-Fox's classic, award winning film Twelve O'Clock High®, starring Gregory Peck, and is designed to allow participants an opportunity to apply Situational Leadership® through a very powerful case study. This course has been revised and enhanced to enable the attendees to translate the behavioral sciences, principles and concepts into effective action.

During this one-day training experience, the participants diagnose the various leadership styles and evaluate the performance of six characters in the film and diagnose group readiness levels during four different time frames. These decisions are made individually and then in teams. Participants then process their individual and team decisions to determine the extent to which synergy was achieved.

This is a great way to review and reinforce the skills and behaviors the participants learned during Situational Leadership®. The film provides a significant opportunity to learn more about leadership, motivation, performance and readiness levels. It can either be conducted on the third day of Situational Leadership® or, many organizations use it as a follow up, three to six months after the initial workshop. Participants must have attended a Situational Leadership® program prior to participation in TOCH.
